100 Congressional Seats Up for Grabs in Next Tuesday's Primaries -- Check Out Our Candidate Comparison Pages

Next Tuesday, 10 states will hold Primary elections for nearly 1/4 of all U.S. House seats.

NumbersUSA has a huge treasure trove of newCANDIDATE COMPARISON PAGES that compare the immigration positions of candidates in races with important immigration implications. We've completed comparison grids for all the Senate primaries as well as races where candidates have completed our Immigration-Reduction Survey. Over the next month, we hope to have all 435 House races on our website, but we'll need your help to fill up the grids.

Please check our election section for the
congressional andgubernatorial races in your state this year. Most of the candidates have thus far declined to take our immigration survey. Candidates -- especially incumbents -- generally won't take a survey unless they feel tremendous constituency pressure. So, we are depending on you to take the steps noted on these Candidate Comparison Pages to push candidates to fill out the survey and be publicly counted.

Be sure you vote every time the polls open this year. Turnout will be fairly light. We need to make sure that NumbersUSA members are a disproportonate part of the voting public.

While California's 53 Congressional seats, a Senate seat, and the Governor's mansion are all up for grabs, much of Tuesday's focus will be in Nevada where Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is fighting for his life, and his November opponent will be chosen. Since Arizona passed its new immigration enforcement law, Sen. Reid has pushed for a mass amnesty in an attempt to motivate Hispanic voters in Nevada. Check out the candidate comparison page to see how Sen. Reid ranks and his potential Republican opponents.

In California, illegal immigration has become a key issue in the state'sgubernatorial race as candidates debate ways to solve the state's fiscal problems. Republican candidates have taken strong stands, while Independent candidate Chelene Nightingale has taken the strongest stand by completing our Immigration-Reduction survey. See how the candidates stack up on the California Gubernatorial comparison grid.

In Arkansas, Democratic Senator Blanche Lincoln looks to keep her re-election bid intact in a run-off against Bill Halter. The winner of Tuesday's run-off will face Immigration Champion and current House Rep. John Boozman in the general election.

Primaries are also being held in Iowa, Maine, Montana, North Dakota, New Jersey, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Virginia.

Again, we'll need your help this summer to fill up all of our candidate comparison grids our website. Download our survey (PDF file) and send it to your favorite candidate and urge them to support lower immigration levels.

HISPANICS GIVE THUMBS DOWN ON OBAMA IN LATEST POLL

Gallup: Obama Approval Plunges Among Hispanics

PRINCETON, NJ – President Obama’s job approval rating among Hispanics has dropped by 20 percent since January, according to a new Gallup poll analysis, suggesting many are angered by his handling of the immigration issue.

Hispanics' approval of President Barack Obama's job performance slipped to 57 percent in May, after falling from 69 percent in January to 64 percent in February. By contrast, whites' and blacks' approval of the president has been steady throughout 2010.

The two major drops in Hispanics' approval of Obama this year -- in February and May -- coincide with the time the president was under fire for not doing enough to promote comprehensive immigration reform in Congress.

"The decline in Obama's approval rating with Hispanics is seen mainly among those interviewed in Spanish: an 11-point drop in the past month and a total of 21 points since January."

Several leading Hispanics and Hispanic groups criticized Obama for not devoting more attention to immigration reform in the speech -- and, more specifically, for not fulfilling his campaign promise of making comprehensive immigration reform a top priority.

As one Hispanic activist wrote at the time, "For those looking for a strong statement in support of comprehensive immigration reform, the speech was a big disappointment." Illinois Rep. Luis Gutierrez was also publicly critical of Obama after the speech.

GALLUP POLL RESULTS WITH EXPLANATION:

June 7, 2010

PRINCETON, NJ -- Hispanics' approval of President Barack Obama's job performance slipped to 57% in May, after falling from 69% in January to 64% in February. By contrast, whites' and blacks' approval of the president has been steady throughout 2010.

2010 Trend, January-May: Obama Job Approval by Race/Ethnicity

These trend figures are based on monthly averages of Gallup Daily tracking for 2010, including interviews with approximately 1,000 Hispanics each month.

Taking Reform Off the Table

The two major drops in Hispanics' approval of Obama this year -- in February and May -- coincide with two periods when the president was under fire for not doing enough to promote comprehensive immigration reform in Congress.

"The decline in Obama's approval rating with Hispanics is seen mainly among those interviewed in Spanish: an 11-point drop in the past month and a total of 21 points since January."

After Obama's State of the Union speech in January, several leading Hispanics and Hispanic groups criticized Obama for not devoting more attention to immigration reform in the speech -- and, more specifically, for not fulfilling his campaign promise of making comprehensive immigration reform a top priority. As one Hispanic activist wrote at the time, "For those looking for a strong statement in support of comprehensive immigration reform, the speech was a big disappointment." Illinois Rep. Luis Gutierrez was also publicly critical of Obama after the speech.

Gallup Daily tracking showed Obama's approval rating among Hispanics falling nearly 10 percentage points in the week after his State of the Union address compared to the week prior to the speech. And Obama's ratings remained subdued in February, resulting in the five-point drop in Hispanics' approval between the two months.

Obama also drew considerable ire from Hispanic groups -- as well as from New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez -- after making statements at the end of April in which he essentially removed comprehensive immigration reform from his legislative agenda for 2010, citing political obstacles.

Again, there appeared to be an almost immediate impact: Obama's approval rating from Hispanics dropped seven points in the week after he made the statements, compared with the week prior to those statements. Publicity about Arizona's passage of a controversial immigration law around the same time may have only intensified Hispanics' desire to see quick action on comprehensive national reform legislation, thus keeping their approval rating of Obama below 60% throughout May.

Decline Steeper Among Spanish-Language Respondents

The decline in Obama's approval rating with Hispanics is seen mainly among those interviewed in Spanish: an 11-point drop in the past month and a total of 21 points since January. By contrast, his approval among Hispanics interviewed in English is down just 5 points since January.

2010 Trend, January-May: Hispanics' Job Approval of Obama -- by Language of Interview

About a third of Gallup's interviews with Hispanics are conducted in Spanish, accommodating respondents who are not proficient in English. Prior Gallup research clearly shows that Hispanics interviewed in Spanish are much more likely to be immigrants to the U.S. than are those interviewed in English, supporting the idea that the immigration issue may be a factor in Hispanics' dwindling approval of the president.

Despite the widening gap in approval of Obama between Hispanics interviewed in Spanish and those interviewed in English, Gallup finds little difference in the trends on the basis of voter registration. His approval rating is down nine points since March among Hispanics who are registered to vote, as well as eight points among Hispanics who are not registered. While Hispanics' reduced support for Obama may or may not have a direct impact on their vote for Congress this fall, it could certainly make it harder for Obama to personally boost midterm turnout among Hispanics as part of the Democrats' get-out-the-vote initiative.

Bottom Line

Hispanics -- and particularly Hispanics who appear to be more closely associated with Hispanic immigrants -- have become increasingly disenchanted with President Obama this year. That said, it is important to note that in all instances a majority of Hispanics continue to say they approve of the president's job performance, exceeding approval among non-Hispanic whites. While Obama has tried to show strong moral support for the idea of comprehensive immigration reform, his reluctance to expend any real political capital to make it happen may be taking a toll on his approval rating in the Hispanic community.

Deflating Social Security

by Chriss W. Street

Deflation is a concept many Americans have a tough time understanding. They do understand the concept of Social Security. As Federal budget deficits soaring, the public is being barraged by late night advertisements to buy gold as an inflationary hedge. Unfortunately, the deflationary environment we are facing today is the biggest threat to the Social Security check Joe the Plumber is counting on for retirement.

sinkhole-jpg

The definition of deflation as a decrease in the general prices of goods and services may be simple, but a Google search for articles on deflation generates 3.5 million “hits”, versus a whopping 354 million “hits” for inflation. This demonstrates that Americans are 100 to 1 more knowledgeable of inflation!

There have only been three bouts of deflation in the United States since its founding over 200 years ago. The first was the recession of 1836, when the currency in the United States contracted by about 30%. The second was after 1865, when the Nation returned to a gold standard by retiring paper money printed during the Civil War. The third period was the Great Depression, when prices and output fell by 25% from 1928 to 1933. Very few Americans are familiar with the specifics of what happened during these periods, but they know it was a bad time for the “common man.”

Social Security was established during the Great Depression and continues to be the most important income stream for America’s seniors. A large majority of the 16 million people over age 65 rely on Social Security for at least half of their income. One-third of this group relies on Social Security for over 90% of their income. Most retirees have come to rely on the annual cost-of-living increases in their check to make their life better. In a deflationary environment we are facing today, few recipients are prepared for their check to actually shrink.

Predictable: Enviros Give Obama a Pass on Oil Spill

by Publius

From today’s Politico:

bird-pano

As the greatest environmental catastrophe in U.S. history has played out on Obama’s watch, the environmental movement has essentially given him a pass — all but refusing to unleash any vocal criticism against the president even as the public has grown more frustrated by Obama’s performance.

About a dozen environmental groups took out a full page ad in the Washington Post Tuesday – not to fault Obama over the ecological catastrophe but to thank him for putting on hold an Alaska drilling project. “We deeply appreciate your decision. . .,” the ad says to Obama.

“President Obama is the best environmental president we’ve had since Teddy Roosevelt,” Sierra Club chairman Carl Pope told the Bangor Daily News last week. “He obviously did not take the crisis in the Minerals Management Service adequately seriously, that’s clear. But his agencies have done a phenomenally good job.”

Some say there’s little doubt that if a spill like the one in the Gulf took place on former President George W. Bush’s watch, environmental groups would have unleashed an unsparing fury on the Republican in the White House. For their liberal ally, Obama, they seem willing to hold their tongues.

Washington Democrats’ Out-of-Control Spending Spree Needs to Stop. Now

by Rep. John Boehner (R-OH)

This week, I had the privilege to deliver the Weekly Republican Address. In it, I talk about how Washington Democrats’ continued failure to end their out-of-control spending spree is scaring the hell out of the American people and hurting our economy. The need for action could not be clearer: a $13 trillion debt, near-10 percent unemployment, and stagnant private sector growth. Having run a small business, I can tell you that all this deficit spending, coupled with the new health care law’sburdensome mandates and tax hikes, is crushing these engines of our economy.

As bad as things are, Democrats don’t even intend to pass a budget, doing nothing instead of seizing this critical opportunity to provide the fiscal discipline that is sorely needed to create jobs and boost our economy. Even after presenting President Obama with a statement signed by more than 100 economists that says just that, he still has not pressed leaders in his own party to take action. Taxpayers have every right to be fed up with this stunning failure of leadership – the kind of leadership President Obama promised to provide.

These and other topics are discussed in the Weekly Republican Address:

“Hello – I’m John Boehner. In these tough economic times, American families have done their level best to stay afloat – spending less and working more while trying to map out a financially sound future. They deserve that same degree of discipline and vigilance from their government.

“But instead of bringing fiscal sanity to Washington like he promised, President Obama has spent taxpayer dollars with reckless abandon, refusing to make tough choices and pushing the burden on to future generations. No price tag has been too high for Washington Democrats, and now we’re all paying the price.

In Just 2 Days, Jerry Brown Proved He Is Not Up to The Job

by Thomas Del Beccaro

The days of pausing between primary and general elections are over. The stakes for election these days are simply too high. Our problems are great and we need leaders up to the task. Jerry Brown, in but two days, proved to everyone that he is not up to the task.

jerry_brown_crossed-arms

Going Negative Because Brown Has No Plan.

Ultimately, voters prefer to vote for something over voting against something. The greatest of our leaders seek not just to get elected – but to get elected with a mandate for action. In order to achieve that mandate, a leader must provide a clear road map of where he or she wants to take the state or the country. To be sure, campaigns – especially between candidates of the same party – feature negative ads – especially down the wire. But if we learned anything from the Whitman/Poizner race, it is something we already knew: if the voters perceive your first action is to go negative – then you will drive up your own negatives as well – and they may never know what positive you have to offer.

Before we get to Jerry Brown, it is important to note that there can be little doubt that Meg Whitman has a plan. Months ago she published a stunning 48 page brochure on that plan. It is stunning because most politicians don’t want to go on record with such exactitude lest they open themselves up to criticism. Leadership, however, doesn’t pause for fear.

In that 48 pages, you can find Meg’s 3 point plan (1) to create jobs, (2) cut spending, (3) and fix education. Those are incredibly pressing problems and her focused plans tell me that she already knows the first lesson of a new government executive: don’t chase too many rabbits at once – lest you catch none of them – and so she plans to veto the hundreds and hundreds of yearly bills outside those 3 priorities.

Another Teachers Union Bailout Runs Into Spending Fatigue

by Kyle Olson

The two national teachers unions thought they had it all figured out: seek a $23 billion bailout for public schools and it would result in a windfall of dues money. Nearly $19 million for the National Education Association and almost $8 million for the American Federation of Teachers by my calculation – a handsome payback for the unions’ election support.

But the trough appears to be closing just as the unions were straightening their bibs.

pig_trough

That, of course, is a good thing for the American taxpayers – and the kids the union purports to put first who would ultimately be stuck with the bill.

U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) recently failed to garner the votes necessary to attach the Keep Our Educators Working Act to a supplemental defense spending bill, but D.C. lawmakers are expected to continue to push for the legislation.

Harkin would have needed 60 votes, and the support of Republicans, to attach the fund as an amendment to the defense bill, which recently passed without the school employee bailout amendment.

“I have no Republicans who will vote for it,” Harkin told Reuters.

My guess is that he’s got a few Democrats eyeing the November election and sensing a pitchfork mentality among the voters and they wouldn’t support it, either.

Can Republicans Win the Hispanic Vote?

by Star Parker

New Census data shows the continued trend that the United States is becoming a nation increasingly less white.

hspncgop2

According to this latest report, 48.6% of children born in the U.S. between July 2008 and July 2009 were “non-white minorities.” That’s up two percentage points from two years earlier, and soon the figure will cross the 50% mark.

The largest growth demographic is Hispanics, who accounted for almost 55% of our population growth. And, most of this growth – two thirds – came from births, not from immigration.

Aside from the knowledge that the country is becoming more colorful, an obvious thing we’ve got to be thinking about is what this means politically. Given that Democrats have been getting the majority of Hispanic and black votes – the two largest minorities – the straightforward conclusion appears to be that demographic trends favor the Democrat Party.

In the 2008 elections, white voters, for the first time ever, accounted for less than 75% of the total vote. It’s been noted that if each ethnic group voted as it did in 2008, but made of up the same percentage of the electorate as it did 20 years ago, John McCain would be our president today.

Clearly, demographic realities present real challenges to the Republican Party and the values that it is supposed to be championing – limited government and free markets.

Most recent polling from Gallup shows Hispanics generically favoring Democrats over Republicans by 2 to 1.

Republicans have got to make headway with this population.

Atlas Network: Don’t Fear Free Trade

by Mytheos Holt

The Atlas Economic Research Foundation – a libertarian leaning organization – recently released a video featuring Foundation Vice-President Tom G. Palmer. Titled “Free Trade: The Great Prosperity Machine,” the video aims to make a compelling case for why free trade is good for everyone, not just foreign competitors, and makes reference to the classic libertarian economist Frederic Bastiat. Interested viewers can look here:

However, there are some problems with the video. For one thing, I’m not sure precisely who Palmer thinks his audience is, or who he wants it to be. Is he trying to persuade people on the Left? If so, then I don’t know how effective it is to talk about the benefits of exchange, since most Leftists view the exchanges that go on in trade relationships as fundamentally exploitative.

Moreover, Palmer’s argument that trade generates peace, while it could persuade some people to switch their position, probably won’t make a dent in the hardcore isolationist Left, which views trade as just another element of the military industrial complex and of the globalized order that underlies it. Maybe Palmer intends his video to speak to the more moderate technocratic Left, insofar as he uses scientific metaphors, but this seems like preaching to the choir. The moderate technocratic Left, as personified by Bill Clinton, has often been an ally of the internationally-oriented Right and the libertarian movement when it comes to trade, and I have yet to see any indicators that this attitude is changing.

What about the protectionist Right? Here things aren’t particularly encouraging either.

Will Our Money Go To Hamas?

by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN)

We are $13 trillion in debt. We will be $19.6 trillion in debt come 2015. Yet, the President wants to send $400 million for “humanitarian aid” to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, an area controlled by the terrorist organization Hamas. As well intentioned this offer may be how can we be sure our money will not be used to fund terrorist activities? Well, we can’t.

If the money given to the late PLO chief Yasser Arafat is any indication, our dollars will be used to fund more terrorist activities and line the pockets of those in charge. Moreover, people have been sentenced to prison for funneling money to Hamas under the guise of “humanitarian aid,” so it’s a bit peculiar that our government would send money under the same conditions.
